 Poetic Movement

Many poets were part of a movement, so was Cummings. He was part of a movement known as modernism. This movement started at the beginning of the 20th century and ended in 1965. In this movement, experimentation and individualism became virtues and before this movement these virtues were being discouraged. This movement started through a series of shocks, in terms of culture. One of the shocks was the famous war, world war l. Due to this war, people could not imagine what would happen with the world, and could not imagine what the world was plunging towards. (12)

Many poets reacted and started turning towards modernist sentiments. Modernists saw many objects and features in different ways. Instead of progress, modernists saw a decline. Instead of renewed technology, a modernist saw cold machinery and an increase in capitalism. And they believed that this would lead to loneliness. (12)

“So far as I am concerned, poetry and every other art was, is, and forever will be strictly and distinctly a question of individuality.”

—E.E. Cummings

“Whenever you think or you believe or you know, you're a lot of other people: but the moment you feel, you're nobody-but-yourself.”

― E.E. Cummings
